Spasticity Clinic
Spasticity is common in people with brain and spinal cord injuries and refers to damage that disrupts the normal signals that tell muscles when to contract and relax. First line treatments involve muscle strengthening and lengthening, but sometimes medical intervention is required. This can take the form of oral medication, injected medications such as botulinum toxin (botox), Cryoneurolysis, and more.
At NPG our neurological physiotherapists are experienced in assessing and managing spasticity, including determining the best treatment plan. When clinically indicated this may include a joint review with our visiting spasticity fellow who is able to offer a variety of medical interventions for spasticity management. Clients will have their spasticity assessed, medical intervention provided, and post therapy follow up (including splinting and casting from our new neighbours - Geelong Orthotics), all in one place.
External referrals to our clinic are welcome. Referring clinicians would be welcome to join the appointments. Follow up therapy can be with either us or with the referring clinician, whichever best meets the clients needs.
The doctor will bulk bill the medical review and intervention so there will be no out of pocket costs for their time. Our senior physiotherapist will be billing for the hour of their time during the spasticity clinic visit, as well as an additional 30 minutes for a combined report from the doctor and physiotherapist following the appointment. For funded clients (NDIS, Support at Home, TAC, etc.), this will be billed to their relevant funding body. For private paying clients, this will be an out of pocket expense at our standard physiotherapy rate. Private health insurance or a GP care plan can be used towards this.
Our spasticity clinic runs on the second Thursday of each month from 10am to 3pm. To find out more or to book in to our Spasticity Clinic, get in touch on 03 4207 0279 or make an enquiry below.
